In Europe the Baltic Hawker (Aeshna serrata) is restricted to coastal areas around the Baltic Sea. The species looks like an oversized Aeshna juncea, with the same bright-yellow bands on the side of the thorax, yellow and blue abdominal markings, and a strikingly yellow costa (i.e. leading edge of the wing). But it is clearly the bigger species and there are a few subtle differences to distinguish the two, such as the thickness of the stem of the T on the frons (much narrower in serrata), the size and shape of the blue abdominal spots (larger and more rectangular in shape in serrata), and the length of the male lower appendage (very short in serrata) - hover your mouse pointer for an illustration. At one site near Helsinki we saw half a dozen males flying together, as they slowly weaved their way through the dense reed beds while looking for ovipositing females. Those females were much easier to hear than to see; they tended to go about their egg-laying business secretively, hiding in little hollows in the reed beds or underneath other vegetation.
