General ➤ a dark- and robust-looking species which in Europe occurs only in Austria
Classification • suborder: Zygoptera (damselflies); family: Coenagrionidae
Scientific name Coenagrion hylas (Trybom, 1889)

Notes • the species has a reputation for being a bit lethargic, but on the few warm and sunny days we managed to photograph it, we observed the same frantic sexual activity as other species display on such days
Habitat • spring-fed ponds at altitudes of 800 metres and upwards; known from about 15 sites in Western Austria
Dimensions • typical body length: 33-38 mm; hindwing: 19-28 mm
Both sexesHead➤ the postocular spots are big, round and blue
 Abdomen• the lower side of the abdomen is black
 Wings• the pterostigma is uniformly grey
MaleAbdomen• the abdomen has a W-shaped mark on S2
FemaleThorax• the thorax is black and yellow/green
  • the hind margin of the pronotum has a tiny lobe in the middle; see also the LineDrawing below
 Abdomen➤ the abdomen is black, yellow/green and sky blue
