The Cretan Spectre (Boyeria cretensis) is endemic to Crete, where it lives - relatively free from competition - in many of the island's permanent rivers and streams. Given Crete's proximity to the Greek mainland, it's remarkable that the island is completely devoid of Cordulegaster species, of Caliaeschna microstigma and of most gomphid species, which would presumably be the Spectre's most likely competitors. In terms of its shape, size, colouration and general appearance the Eastern Spectre is very similar to its Western counterpart Boyeria irene. And its behaviour too is very similar, which is bad news for photographers; in five days' worth of trying we did not manage to see a single male at rest. So our photographs below are of ovipositing adult and freshly emerged females, with the latter obviously much easier to photograph. [Update: In June 2015 we did manage to find and photograph a single male at rest; see photographs below.]
