Species excluded from our European checklist
The Field Guide to the Dragonflies and Damselflies of Britain and Europe (Dijkstra, Schröter & Lewington, 2020), Europe's Dragonflies (Smallshire & Swash, 2020), and the Atlas of the European Dragonflies and Damselflies (Boudot & Kalkman (eds.), 2015) all include a number of species and subspecies which - for a variety of reasons - we have excluded from our European checklist. - Stout Pintail (Acisoma inflatum Selys, 1882), which occurs in Algeria and which was formerly identified as the Grizzled Pintail (Acisoma panorpoides Rambur, 1842)
- Common Green Darner (Anax junius (Drury, 1773)), which occurs in North and Central America and is a very rare vagrant in Europe
- Dark-Winged Groundling (Brachythemis fuscopalliata (Selys, 1887)), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Glittering Demoiselle (Calopteryx exul Selys, 1853), which occurs in north-west Africa
- Eastern Bluet (Coenagrion ecornutum (Selys, 1872)), which occurs in the Urals
- Russian Bluet (Coenagrion glaciale (Selys, 1872)), which occurs in the Urals and in northern Russia
- Syrian Bluet (Coenagrion syriacum (Morton, 1924)), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Atlas Goldenring (Cordulegaster princeps Morton, 1916), which occurs in Morocco
- Oriental Scarlet (Crocothemis servilia (Drury, 1773)), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Desert Bluet (Enallagma deserti (Selys, 1871)), which occurs in north-west Africa
- Levant Clubtail (Gomphus davidi Selys, 1887), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Algerian Clubtail (Gomphus lucasii Selys, 1849), which occurs in Algeria
- Syrian Clubtail (Stylurus ubadschii (Schmidt, 1953)), which occurs in Turkey
- Kazakh Bluetail (Ischnura aralensis Haritonov, 1979), which occurs in the Urals
- Red Chaser (Libellula pontica Selys, 1887), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Siberian Cruiser (Macromia amphigena Selys, 1871), which occurs in the Urals
- Dark Pincertail (Onychogomphus assimilis (Schneider, 1845)), which occurs in Turkey
- Boudot's Pincertail (Onychogomphus boudoti Ferreira, 2014), which occurs in Morocco
- Waved Pincertail (Onychogomphus flexuosus (Schneider, 1845)), which occurs in Turkey
- Pale Pincertail (Onychogomphus lefebvrii (Rambur, 1842)), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Levant Pincertail (Onychogomphus macrodon Selys, 1887), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Desert Skimmer (Orthetrum ransonnetii (Brauer, 1865)), which occurs in Northern Africa and a single immature male of which was observed on the Canary Islands in 2018 (Mearns 2018)
- Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis (Burmeister, 1839)), which occurs in North-America
- Lined Hooktail (Paragomphus lineatus (Selys, 1850)), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Ivory Featherleg (Platycnemis dealbata Selys in Selys & Hagen, 1850), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Powdered Featherleg (Platycnemis kervillei (Martin, 1909)), which occurs in south-eastern Turkey
- Barbary Featherleg (Platycnemis subdilatata Selys, 1849), which occurs in north-west Africa
- Cherry-Eye Sprite (Pseudagrion sublacteum (Karsch, 1893)), which occurs in Morocco and in tropical Africa
- Phantom Flutterer (Rhyothemis semihyalina (Desjardins, 1832)), which occurs in tropical Africa
- Russian Emerald (Somatochlora graeseri Selys, 1887), which occurs in the Urals and in northern Russia
- Highland Darter (Sympetrum (striolatum) nigrescens Lucas, 1912), which occurs along the Atlantic coasts of Ireland, Scotland and Norway
- Island Darter (Sympetrum (striolatum) nigrifemur (Selys, 1884)), which occurs in Macaronesia
- Dwarf Darter (Sympetrum haritonovi Borisov, 1983), which occurs in Turkey
- Plain Darter (Sympetrum vulgatum decoloratum (Selys, 1884)), which occurs in Turkey
- Keyhole Glider (Tramea basilaris (Palisot de Beauvois, 1817)), which occurs in Africa and Asia and two vagrant individuals of which were observed on the Italian island of Linosa, south of Sicily, in 2016 (Vigano et al. 2017)
- Blue Basker (Urothemis edwardsii (Selys, 1849)), which occurs in Algeria and in tropical Africa
