Atlas of the European Dragonflies and Damselflies

The Pronged Clubtail (Gomphus graslinii) takes its common name from the forked shape of the male's upper appendages, which carry a large tooth on the side. The species is endemic to South-Western France and Iberia, where its preferred habitat consists of fairly large and reasonably fast-flowing rivers. During our field trip to the Ardèche in June 2008, we managed to see and photograph only one, freshly-emerged male, so our coverage of the species is somewhat limited for the moment. With time we hope to revisit the area and to provide more and better photographs. [Update: during a 2010 field trip to the South of Spain, and again in the East of Spain in 2011, we saw good numbers of this species and found that the females in particular are very photogenic indeed - see our photographs below.] The species' most characteristic feature is the very narrow antehumeral stripe.
