The Ruddy Darter is a common, small dragonfly which is widely distributed throughout Europe, although it's largely absent from Northern Scandinavia and Southern Iberia. As its scientific and common names suggest, Sympetrum sanguineum's most characteristic feature is the male's blood-red abdomen, which is clearly club-shaped and at its widest on S7-S8. As in so many other dragonfly species, immature males share the same colour as the females, which in this species is a deep, golden yellow. The legs are all black.
