The Yellow Clubtail (Gomphus simillimus) is home in the South of France and in Iberia, although some small populations occur as far North as Belgium. Its common name is very apt indeed: the species' most striking feature is indeed its bright yellow colour, offset by bold black lines (although we have, in fact, seen mature males that looked rather greenish). The most easily recognisable feature to distinguish Gomphus simillimus from its congeners is the width of the yellow antehumeral stripeNote: By contrast, the antehumeral stripe in Gomphus graslinii is much narrower than the black stripes above and below it., which is about as wide as the black lines above and below it. We photographed the species during a field trip to the North of Spain in 2009, where after a prolonged period of cold and wet weather populations appeared heavily depleted. As a result we can only present our photos of one female on this page; we'll add males and copulas at the earliest opportunity. [Update: we have now added a few photographs of males, which we made in the South of Spain in 2010 and 2012.]
