Erythromma viridulum

The Small Redeye is one of only two European species with red eyes but whose bodies are not predominantly red. Compared to its larger stable mate the Large Redeye, Erythromma viridulum is a relatively small, dainty damselfly. It's a mainly Southern and Central European species, but it seems to have extended its range Northwards considerably and is now quite common as far North as the Netherlands. The species' main distinguishing features include, obviously, its pale-red eyes (in the male; the female has brownish eyes), the heavily reduced antehumeral stripes (in the male; the female's antehumerals tend to be complete), the light-blue sides to the male's S2 and S8, and the blue tail-light on the male's S9 and S10 (interrupted by an x-shaped black mark on S10).
